Abstract
For fitting torsion bars in vehicle suspensions, a vehicle with the torsion bars previously adjusted to give the correct vehicle height and weight distribution has marks (25, 26) made on the ends (27, 28) of the bar (30) opposite marks (22, -23) on the supports (21, 24). The bar is then removed, and subjected to the necessary torque in a suitable machine. The ends of the bars have different numbers of splines so that with the torque applied, only one pair of splines is in line. These two splines are then marked. Other torsion bars can then be subjected to the required torque and the inline splines marked. By counting splines the positions which should correspond to the support markings are found. The bars can then be fitted and the support (24) twisted and bolted in place, giving the correct torsion to the bar.
