Abstract

A number of strain gauges or other tension measuring wires, are connected to an alarm which may be audible or visual. The alarms are set to operate when the maximum permissable strain in the rigging wire is approached. Additionally the running rigging is fitted with release mechanisms which are brought in to operate if the alarm conditions are ignored. This would cause sail halyards to be released or sheets to be eased. Masts and sails are thus protected against damage due to excessive pressure or tension.
