Abstract

Paint impregnated tapes for applying anticorrosion paints to metal surfaces, comprise an active mixt. of plasticised drying oils carried by a layer of textile material of non-woven construction. Certain types of non-woven cloth made of fibranne nylon and butadiene-acrylonitrile fibres, with a dry wt. of 40 g/m2 or (2) of 60-80 g/m2, (3) a blend of viscose and PVA wet strengthening agents with a grammage of 126 g/m2 (4) a polyamide/bleached kraft paper PVA/wood fibre mixt. paper, (5) non woven fabric made by crossover fusion of fibres based on fibranne and co-extruded filaments with a polyamide sheath over a polypropylene core. Pref. the material can be hardened by heat treatment due to the presence of some epoxy resin and latent curing agents (B based) which are heat sensitive. Alt. curing resin may be short oil alkyd resin esterified with glycerol contg. 40% phthalic anhydride and 40% fatty acid, pref. derived from castor oil. Pref. the impregnated fabric is plasticised using a citric ester (acetyl tributylcitrate). High m.pt. wax (137-139 degrees C) or bentonite may also be added to control resin viscosity. Opt. rot-proofing additives may be used. Esp. suitable for mfr. of tapes 50-1600 pref. 80-250 mym thick used for sealing pressed steel joints. Pref. the tape is applied using sufficient tension to generate potential thickness contraction and lateral expansion when the tape is heated to cure the hardening agents.
