Abstract
Process for mfg. and regenerating solid porous catalysts, used for the oxidn. of ammonia in the presence of air, by the spraying at a controlled temp. above the decompsn. temp., of a decomposable molten mixt. or soln. of nitrates consisting of cobalt nitrate with at least one cpd. selected from the nitrates of Ce, Mg or Fe. The mixt. is pref. subjected to pressure to obtain a fine spray or a hot oxidising or neutral carrier gas may be used; the mixt. may contain trace amts. of promoters consisting of metal- salts or -acids in the liq. state, esp. of Pt. Decompsn. of the mixt. may occur on a heated support and regeneration of a catalytic bed can be achieved in situ in a reactor. This catalyst provided a yield of 96% NO2 as compared with 94% by a known process, and catalyst can be regenerated with virtually no interruption to prodn. and with substantial savings in cost.
