Abstract

Contaminated catalyst particles are regenerated by (a) bringing the particles at random into a bed with a thickness is not >5 layers of particles, (b) passing a gas stream of air, is not >2% O2 and is not >5% inert gas, through the bed from one surface to the other, (c) heating all the particles in the bed practically uniformly, and (d) keeping the particles uniformly at a temp. not higher than just below the temp. at which the particles would sinter. Regeneration is in a separate appts., allowing conversion plant to be out of operation for only a short period. Regeneration temps. can be completely controlled in all stages. Steam is not needed as carrier gas. The temp. is higher than that at which toxic prods. e.g. Ni carbonyl, are formed. The process and plant are safe for the operatives. Regeneration takes 25-45 minutes at about 11 degrees C below the sintering temp. of the catalyst. The catalysts used are those from hydrocarbon conversions.
