Abstract

The ring laser rate gyroscope is used to measure angular velocity and rotation. It has a laser source (1) producing two laser beams, of the same frequency, which go through two identical electro-optic crystals (2, 3) such as piezoelectric quartz or strontium niobate. The crystals from a voltage generated by a pulse generator (30) and transformed by a circuit (31). When the gyroscope is subjected to an angular velocity, frequency differences due to an effect similar to the Doppler effect are detected by two sensors (4, 5). The signals from the sensors (4, 5) are then modified to obtain the value and the sense of the measured angular velocity.
