Abstract

The capacitive load cell has a cylindrical case and an axial rod whose displacement is proportional to an applied load. A series of concentrically grooved discs (12) spaced apart by rings (14) are interposed between a series of concentrically grooved rings (16) spaced apart by rings (18). The discs (12) and the rings (16) function as plates of a variable capacitor such that the raised portions of the discs (12) penetrate into the grooves of the rings (16). The cell has two metal spring diaphragms, which may be plane or corrugated, situated at each end of the cell to provide axial displacement only of the moving armatures (12). A set of additional springs is used to obtain additional axial restraint when measurement of higher loads is required.
