Abstract
Aldehydes are prepd. by reacting a 2-30C olefin, CO and H2 at a total press. of 5-142 kg/cm2 and 60-180 degrees C in the presence of an ionic Rh cpd. of formula Rh(CO)XYLAN (I) comprising a cationic Rh-contg. part Rh(CO)xLy and a non-coordinating anionic part An-, (in which x=integer 1-5; y=0-4; and L is a 3-90C tert. organo-Sb cpd. 3-90C tert. organo-As cpd. 3-90C tert. organo-Sb cpd. 3-90C tert. organo-N-cpd. or 2-80C binary organo-S cpd). (I) is used at 10-6-10-1 mole/l and the ligand L is present in a molar excess of 1-5000 over the stochometric amt. necessary to form the complex. No isomerisation of the olefin occurs, also there is no hydrogenation of the olefin or aldehyde. The reaction temps are lower, giving higher yields and higher reaction rates.
