Abstract

Improvement in a process for hydroformylating an alpha-olefin to produce aldehydes with one carbon atom more than the alpha-olefin, by reacting the alpha-olefin with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium complex catalyst consisting of essentially in rhodium complexing with carbon monoxide and a triarylphosphine, and in the presence of free triarylphosphine, characterized in that it comprises practicing said process at a temperature of about 90 to about 130º c, a partial pressure of carbon monoxide less than about 3, 86 kilograms per absolute square centimeter, a hydrogen partial pressure of less than approximately 14.06 kilograms per absolute square centimeter, a total gas pressure of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and alpha-olefin less than approximately 28.12 kilograms per square centimeter absolute, and at least about 100 moles of free triarylphosphine for each mol of catalytically active rodiometallic; and minimizing or substantially preventing the deactivation of said rhodium complex catalyst at a given maximum rate of loss of activity by controlling and correlating the carbon monoxide partial pressure, the temperature, and the free triarylphosphine: metal rhodium catalytically active molar ratio within said values provide the minimum stability factor f necessary to essentially give the minimum rate of loss of activity; said stability factor f being defined by the equation: ** (formula) ** where y = k1 k2t k3p k4 (l/rh), where t = reaction temperature (º c), p = partial pressure of monoxide carbon (kg/cm2 absolute), (l/rh) = free triarylphosphine molar ratio: catalytically active metallic rhodium, and f1, dºk2, k3 and k4 are constant and are fixed for each triarylphosphine.
