Abstract

Haloalkyl carboxylic esters of formula (I) (where X is halogen; R and R1 are H alkyl alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or heterocyclic gp. opt. substd. by gps. such as halo, alkoxycarbonyl, ketone, t-amid, aldehyde, nitrile, -NO, -NO2, sulphone thio-ether or CF3) are prepd. by reaction of an aldehyde R1.CHO in presence of a metallic halide of gp.IIB as catalyst, in which the reaction of the aldehyde is reacted with the acid R.CO2H in presence of an excess of thionyl halide. Carboxylic acids may be used as starting matl. instead of acid chlorides as in known processes. The prods. are intermediates in the synthesis of drugs.
