Abstract

A dry process sterilizer for documents is claimed in which he document are subjected to pressure waves from an ultrasonic generator and projector head assembly comprising an amplifier feeding a piezo-electric crystal incorporating selected ferrites or steel balde inserts and formed as a ring coaxial with the projected beam of sterilizing energy. For processing small batches of documents a pref. embodiment comprises a sliding drawer which is opened, loaded with a batch of documents and then closed, closure of the drawer actuates switches to energise the generator and simultaneously locates the content of the drawer in the path of the sterilizing beam. Larger quantities of documents can be treated on a conveyor which carries them through a sterilizing zone. Decontaminating documents, esp. banknotes, the process is dry and has no detrimental effect on the documents. The small unit is inexpensive and compact enough to b e mounted on a bank clerk's counter.
