Abstract

Antistatic agents for plastics have formula (I): where R1 and R2 are 1-3C alkyl, R3 = relatively long chain gp. comprising an acyl gp. bound to an alkylene chain, which opt. contains hetero atoms, on one side of a carboxyl gp., R4 = (m)ethyl or propyl gp., and Y = an anion, esp. a halide or alkyl sulphate ion such as (m)ethyl sulphate. Cpds. (I) have excellent antistatic effect when incorporated into plastics materials, and are esp. effective in polyurethanes. The acyl gp. may be bound to the alkylene chain by an ester bond or an amide bond. Preferred cpds. (I) have 2-6C acyl gps. bound via 4-6C or 15-19C alkylene chains. In a typical prepn. 4-20 C (un)satd. acid(s) stearic acid, oleic acid, etc.) are reacted with a 5% molar excess of an alpha,omega-diamine with 2-6 CH2 gps. between the two N atoms and in which the alpha amino gp. is primary and the omega amino gp. is tertiary, e.g. dimethylaminopropylamine. The mixt. is refluxed at 150 degrees C. When the acid value has fallen to 30 (4-5 hours) the mxit. is distilled to remove water until the acid value is 5. The excess diamine is then stripped off under vacuum to give a diamine CH3(CH2)A-CONH(CH2)B-N(CH3)2 where A = 4-20 and B = 2-6. This diamine is then stirred at 150 degrees C with a dialkyl sulphate such as diethylsulphate to give CH3(CH2)A-CONH(CH2)B-N(CH3)2(R) + RSO4-.
