Abstract

In a lead acid accumulator using porous sheaths permeable to electrolyte surrounding the leads and packed with partly active material comprising PbO, H2SO4 and sufficient water to reduce the viscosity, the sheaths are filled with paste by injecting under pressure after the sheaths have been partially or completely conditioned with a material which fills and partly or completely covers the pores, and the permeability to electrolyte is reestablished (in)directly. The conditioning material is pref. a film former such as 4% CMC, PVA etc. which blocks the pores during filling and is subsequently removed with a solvent. Active paste is retained across the pore surfaces during pressure injection and is not carried away with the excess water.
