Abstract

Sieve-type plates for distn. and other columns are constructed from graphite plates drilled and counterbored, or slotted with slots having the same cross-section as the holes, so that vapour rising up through the column is accelerated into active zones - either small-diameter holes or narrow slots - at the upper face of the plate, thereby promoting good vapour-liquid contact. Used for vapour-liq. contacting applications in the oil and chemical industries in which vapour and liq. pass in counter-current flow. A simple design of plate suitable for machining out of solid non-corrosive materials, e.g. graphite.
