Abstract

Superbasic detergent additive for lubricants esp. for 2-and 4-stroke petrol and diesel engines, is prepd. by (a) forming an oil-soluble sulphonate by reacting (I) a sulphonic acid with (II) an excess of an oxide or hydroxide of a Gp. IIA metal, in the presence of (III) a mixt. of a lower aliphatic alcohol and a liquid hydrocarbon, and (IV) a polyalkenyl-succinimide-amine salt of formula (IVa) or (IVb): (where R is satd. 20-250C aliphatic hydrocarbyl; X is 2-5C alkylene; n is 1-5; Z is the anionic group of a protonic acid of formula ZHm; m is an integer; and alpha is the degree of neutralisation of the amine functions of (IV), and is at most equal to (n + 1), and n in (IVb), (b) carbonating the excess of (II) with CO2 without precipitating the formed carbonate; (c) separating the uncarbonated fraction of II from the mixt.; and (d) eliminating the solvent. A stable additive with high base index, (40-50% higher than additives prepd. in the absence of (IV) is obtd.
