Abstract

Rapid welding process for steels contg. 13% Mn, comprises using freezing mist of expanding CO2 gas, the flow of the gas being adapted to suit the welding conditions and keep the temp. of the parts being welded between ambient temp. and 100-120 degrees C; and, in place of the welding electrodes, a wire with low resistance to obt. a large deposit of metal per unit of time. The process is pref. used for the welding of crossing points on railway lines, using points made of cast or forget 13% Mn steel welded to two adjacent rails. The expanding mist of CO2 ensures the rapid cooling of the Hadfield 13% Mn steel, thus retaining its wear resistance.
