Abstract

The solar navigation instrument can be used to obtain data to determine latitude and longitude of a navigating point without reference to the earth horizon. It can be used for coastal navigation in conjunction with reference points. It consists of five components: a base plate, a protractor, a pivot, a pointer and a cross frame. The base plate has a reference meridian line which can be aligned with the horizontal, a line perpendicular to the meridian line, and a graduated declination arc. The protractor can be moved about the pivot to determine angles in conjunction with the pointer. The cross frame is graduated with time scales and is used to determine apparent solar local time.
