Abstract

The method of transporting and placing long conduits underwater e.g. on sea bed, alleviates the dependency of the towing operation on calm seas, and entails the towing of tensioned submerged lengths with controllable air-water floatation-ballast units maintaining the conduit at the desired station beneath surface water level. Tension is applied by long calbes terminally supported by tugs the greater tractive force being applied by the leading tug to achieve the desired displacement. Floatation-ballast units attach to the conduit at intervals of several hundred metres and conduit depth is maintained by suspension cables from subsidiary tugs. Swell compensators act with each suspension cable.
