Abstract

Lutidine prepolymers are prepd. by reacting 2, 4- or 2, 6-lutidine with an aromatic dialdehyde, at 150-220 degrees C, (pref. b. pt), and in the presence of a suitable catalyst (for the condensation between the >CO gp. of the aldehyde and the CH3 gps. of the lutidine), until a viscous liquid is obtd. The prepolymer may be formed as a pptd by adding an ether, MeOH or EtOH to the viscous liquid. The process obviates prior art, rapid setting; the reaction being controlled to give a viscous prepolymer which can be processed and hardener at 200-250 degrees C to prods. with good mechanical strength and heat resistance. It is esp. useful in prodn. of composite structures, e.g. laminates, in combination with fibrous materials, esp. carbon fibres.
