Transparent polyamides are mfrd. by polycondensation, optionally in several stages, of following classes of cpds.; (alpha1)1,2-bis(aminomethyl)-cyclobutane, (alpha2)aromatic or cycloaliphatic diamines, (alpha3)alkylenediamines, (beta1)aromatic dicarboxylic acids, (beta2)aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, (gamma1)aromatic amino-carboxylic or aminoalkylcarboxylic acids and (gamma2)aliphatic aminocarboxylic acids. Prods. have good transparency, impact strength and ball-thrust hardness, and glass transition temps. above 90 degrees C. Hardness is greater than that of products of comparable glass transition temp. Injection moulding or extrusion gives mouldings suitable for use at high temps.
