Abstract

The vertical container stack (10) is refrigerated, and the containers (5) are introduced at the top of the stack (10) at a temperature approximately equal to the ambient temperature, and removed from the bottom of the stack (10) e.g. at a temperature of -18 degrees centigrade. The containers are re-inserted for re-use and the inserted container (SO) passes from the input (E) via cleaning brushes (22, 23) to drying means (24, 25) and after testing the defective containers are diverted and the others are returned to the container stack (10). The containers (5) are dispersed vi a retractable drawer (48) which can be pulled out to obtain the container under control of a coin-operated mechanism.
