Abstract

Copolymers (I) contain isobutylene (II) and N-vinylcarbazole (III) in ratio 1:99-99:1. (I) are used with polyisobutylene (IV) and/or poly-N-vinylcarbazole (V) as additives to lubricating oils. The initial degradation temp of (I) is about 25 degrees C higher than that of (IV). (II) and (III) are copolymerised in the presence of an electron-acceptor, pref. AlBr3 or BF3, in a solvent, pref. an aromatic hydrocarbon or an alkyl chloride, esp. toluene or methylene chloride, at -10 degrees C (-30 degrees C), and opt. with a co-initiator, e.g. water, the amt. of initiator, is, e.g. about 10-3 moles AlBr3/litre of reaction mixt. After polymerisation, a deactivator, esp. (m)ethanol, water or acetone, is added, and the co-polymer is pptd., washed, and dried at 40 degrees C. (I) have mol. wt. 5000-500,000.
