Abstract

Alluvial deposits and sinking materials in water systems may be removed and their formation prevented by adding a water-in-oil emulsion contg. opt. 1-40 (20-40) wt. % of a finely divided stable water-soluble polymer having high mol. wt., e.g. 100000-20 000 000, prepd. by emulsion polymsn. of water-soluble ethylenically unsatd. monomers. Used in cooling systems, e.g. of steel industry furnaces or cooling towers of oil refineries. Additives can have a higher active ingredient content than materials used hitherto, are easily dissolved and provide a better cost : efficiency ratio. Deposits are dispersed in water stream and agglomerated to mobile flocculates. Pref. polymers are copolymers of acrylamide with Na acrylate, (3-acrylamide-3-Me)-Bu-trimethyl ammonium chloride, 2-acrylamido-2-Me-propane sulphonic acid or dimethyl-diallyl ammonium chloride.
