Abstract
Steroid heterosides (I), esp. those from Ruscus aculeatus, are purified by extracting an organic phase contg. at least one solvent for (I) with an aq. phase of pH >=13, (I) being present in one or other of these phases, then decanting and recovering (I) from the organic phase. (I) have venotonic activity and are hydrolysed to prosapogenins and genins. The pref. 2% ethanolic soln. has significant activity in the carragheenin oedema test and is used in treating varicose and prevaricose states. Prodts. are practically 100% pure so have defined and consistent activity. Overall yield is 50-80%.
