Abstract

Flowers are pre-treated by coating the part of the stem which is to be subsequently immersed in water with a continuous or discontinuous layer or layers of preservative matl. which will dissolve in the water to form a preservative soln. The layer may be applied by spraying, or by soaking for a short period in a concd. soln., and may comprise e.g., aluminium sulphate, calcium nitrate, heavy metal salts or complexes, organic acids, phenol, chloral hydrate, hyrazine sulphate, hydroxy-8-quinoline etc. A surfactant may be added to provide homogeneous distribution over the stem, and a small quantity of polyethylene glycol to increase the consistency of the layer.
