Abstract
Hexanitrostilbene (HN5) is prepd. by adding gradually and with agitation TNT in soln. in mixt. of tetrahydrofuran and n- or iso- propanol, pref. in 10-25 times its wt of n- or iso-propanol, to excess aq. soln. of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hyprochlorite, pref. soln. is 5-12% by wt hypochlorite, at temp. 0 degree C to ambient, pref. not exceeding 15 degrees C, then crude HNS is recovered and possibly purified. Pref. reaction is in apparatus having 1st reactor with divergent-convergent injector for rapid mixing of matls. 2nd reactor in U-tube form with extension in form of cooling coils emptying into an overflow vessel with agitator and means for keeping reaction mixt. below about 15 degrees C. Use of n- or iso-propanol gives easy sepn. of THF without previous costly distn. Yield is usually 30-40%, max. 46%.
