Abstract

(A) Cpds. of formula (I) and their salts are new: where R1 is H, benzyl or SO3H. (B) The intermediate of formula (II) (see under 'Preparation') where R1" is benzyl is also new: (I) have hypolipaemic and hypocholesterolaemic activity. A soln. of 37. 5 g. diethylaniline in 30 ml CS2 was stirred and cooled, and 12.5 ClSO3H added dropwise at 10 degrees C. The mixt. was treated with a soln. of 10 g. (II; R1"=H) in 35 ml. CS2, stirred 1 hr. at room temp., and poured into a stirred soln. of 8.25 g. NaOH and 3.75 g. Ba(OH)2 in 300 ml. H2O. The mixt. was extracted with benzene and the aqs. phase evapd. to dryness. The residue was recrystd. from EtOH/H2O to give the Na salt of (I; R1=SO3H), m.p. 210 degrees C (decomp.).
