Abstract

The complete, gas bag, is typically, fitted around the steering column with the inflatable cushion folded as a bellows on the steering wheel centre. There is a valve in the bag controlling gas outflow. The heater mechanism consists of combustible material surrounding an explosive charge. The combustible material is in a separate chamber from the compressed gas and a diffuser is provided as a top cover for the container. The valve has a breakable closing disc. The explosion simultaneously opens the valve and heats the compressed gas, forcing the gas outwards inflating the cushion against the driver's body.
