Abstract

An air filter for automobiles with an element of pleated paper, plastic foam or wire mesh is made up of two parts, the fixed main body with inlet pipe and an outlet pipe, did and filter element made up in a monobloc unit which is disposable and replaceable. Both the lid and filter element base-plate, which are of thermoplastic material at least in the area where the element is attached, have hollows and/or projections either continuous or discontinuous limiting the contact area of lid and base-plate with element. The groove in which the filter element sits in the lid and base-plate has a continuous or discontinuous excessive thickness along its bottom and on assembly this excessive thickness is melted and the filter element pushed into the molten layer. On cooling the molten plastic resolidifies forming a rigid bond and airtight seal with the filter element. Used in air filters specif. for automobiles, but can be used for stationary applications, e.g. diesel generators. Fusion welding technique to combine filter element with lid and base-plate cuts out expensive moulding process for conventional filters. Making lid and filter element in one disposable assembly makes replacement of filter element quicker and easier.
