Abstract

Between at least two floors are elastic pads, visco-elastic shock absorbers and wind responsive stabilisers. The elastic pads are formed of stacks of vulcanised rubber discs between pairs of steels discs, the end discs of the pads being fixed to larger mounting discs. The stabilisers have pairs of discs (16a, 16b) with high friction coatings (18a, 18b) the upper disc being secured to the upper storey (15) and the lower disc being secured to the piston (19) of a ram (20) secured to the lower storey. A detector senses movement between the plates due to high wind forces and operates an electromagnet (22) to open a valve (21) and cause the ram to press the plates together more firmly.
