Abstract

The shot has a decarburised surface layer, pref. 0.001" min. in depth and with a Knoop hardness, corrected for a 500g load, of max. 76; it is made from an iron with 0.005-0.25 wt. % carbon prior to decarburising the skin. The pref. mfg. process consists of heating the shot to 593-982 degrees C in a reducing atmos. contg. sufficient water-vapour to maintain a dew point of >=21 degrees C. Pref. a H2 or a H2/N2 mixt. atmos. is used. The matl. can replace lead short used in cartridges.
