A process is claimed for preparing novel melamine-formaldehyde precondensates comprising a 2-stage condensn of 3-6 moles HCHO and 1 mole HCHO, the first stage being effected in alkaline medium and the second in acid medium, the reaction taking place in a mixt. of alcohols contg. a small amt. of lower alcohols such as MeOH to prevent formation of insoluble agglomerates in acid medium and in the complete absence of water except that produced by the c condens. Also claimed are non aqs. dispersions of vinyl and acrylic copolymers stabilised by the above claimed MF condensn. prods. The Mf condesn. prods. hade an aliphatic hydrocarbon tolerance 5, small weakly of HCHO, cure at relatively low temps., give flawless glossy coatings, when used in varnishes, and paints, these coatings being resistant to chemical agents, weathering and ageing.
