Abstract
The prodn. of acid chlorides by gas-phase phosgenation of acid vapour in the presence of active carbon according to the Parent patent is improved in that active carbon of mineral origin with a particle dia. of ca. 2 mm is used. Mineral-derived active carbon is just as effective as a catalyst as vegetable derived active carbon and is much less expensive; it also has a longer useful life, but is less selective. The COCl2/acid molar ratio is pref. ca.3. As soon as the reactants are in the vapour phase, the reaction is pref. effected at a temp. slightly below the theoretical b.p. of the acid. The active carbon should have a specific surface of ca. 1100m2/g and an iodine no. of ca. 1100 mg/g; suitable carbons are marketed by "Chemviron".
