Abstract

A press. esp. a wine press. comprises (a) a rotatable cylinder mounted on a base frame and having two fixed end plates connected by tie rods, (b) a system of struts, starting from one of the fixed plates and supporting a piston cylinder unit, the piston rold of which is connected to a press platen axially displaceable in the interior of the rotary cylinder, (c) a cylinder shell consisting of a discharge cage fabricated pref. from stainless steel perforated sheet and having a peripheral edge on which pairs of wheels roll, and which are connected with further piston-cylinder units for the axial displacement of the discharge cage. Pref. a feed pipe for the raw material opens into one of the plates and incorporates a non-return valve. The press can be filled without bringing it to rest, and contamination of the must by iron, caused by corrosion and by acids and tanning resulting from tearing of the skins of the grapes and disintegration of their flesh is prevented. The fore runnings can be removed after only a very short contact with the remaining mash so thatn oxidn. is minimal.
