Abstract
In an isotopic sepn. process, the element to be sepd. into its isotopes is used in the form of an ionised salt dissolved in a vapour or gas under supercritical pressure and temp. conditions, isotopic sepn. taking place due to the difference in the mobilities of the ions in the resulting homogenous gas mixt. Ionic mobilities are much higher in the gas phase than in the liq. phase, so that more efficient sepn. is possible than in the case of, e.g. countercurrent electrolysis. The energy consumption is low; e.g. uranium can be enriched with U235 by a factor of 10 with an electrical energy consumption of ca. 35 k Wh/g. The sepn. is pref. effected by evapg. a soln. of the salt in a polar solvent, e.g. H2O or SO2, and circulating the resulting supercritical vapour-phase soln. between a cathode and anode in the cathode-to-anode direction at a rate equal to the av. velocity of the two ions to be sepd., so that only the light ion reaches the cathode. Other electrolytes can be added to the soln. to increase its conductivity.
