Abstract

The engine throttle is turned by a lever connected to the accelerator pedal by a linkage which includes a strong tension spring. The linkage moves the throttle against a weaker spring which returns the throttle to idling conditions when the pedal is released. A knob on the vehicle dash-board is attached to one end of a flexible cable the other end of which passes through a slot in the throttle lever and ends in a block. When the driver pulls the knob the cable pulls the block up to the lever and then turns the lever against the strong spring in the accelerator linkage to bring the throttle to a shut off position even if the accelerator is being mistakenly depressed by the driver as he switches off.
