Abstract

The circuit-breaker which is used for transformer protection is tripped by two conditions. The first is a low overload which is detected across resistance in the windings. A photo-diode (18) senses the voltage across the resistance by means of a light-emitting diode (14) and trips the breaker via an amplifier. The second condition is a large overload which is detected by a thermo-couple inserted into a conductor in a beryllium oxide cup which has high electrical insulation but low thermal resistance. The thermo-couple causes a threshold circuit to trip which operates the circuit-breaker. This samples the transformer temperature accurately and overcomes the difficulties of complex mechanical circuit-breakers.
