Abstract

Polysaccharides are produced by fermentation of glucides using suitable microorganism, esp. a Xanthomonas such as Xanthomonas campestus, and using as medium to be fermented either the residues left after distillation of the diluent which has been used to insolubilise the polysaccharide of a preceding step for producing the latter by fermentation, or the ashes resulting from the incineration of these distillation residues, or both the distillation residues and the ashes. The process obviates the problem of evacuating the liq. or solid residues and permits the inexpensive recovery and re-use of part of the inorg. salts reqd. for the fermentation, esp. phosphates.
