Abstract

Cleaning of the surface of cylindrical filter candles is carried out by scraper-knives which are disposed concentrically around the candles and which are moved up and down so as to detach the diatomaceous earth and impurities deposited on the surface during filtration. The scraper-knives have two ridges to detach deposits when moving in both directions and are mounted on a plate coaxial with the shell of the filter and moved up and down by a screw device driven by a motor and reduction gear. Liq. to be filtered passes from the shell into the filter candles and the filtered liq. leaves at the top, solids being periodically ejected from the bottom. Thus cleaning of the filter candles is carried out during filtration automatically. Fresh diatomaceous earth can be fed continuously with the liq. to be filtered maintaining its porosity.
