Abstract

Antibacterial substances are examined in vitro for their efficiency against pathogenic germs before a prescription for a therapeutic agent can be prescribed. A supporting device, made from a sufficiently rigid filter paper, is rendered hydrophobic by impregnation with a wax; the five arms directed towards the outside and the five arms directed inwardly carry small discs with different substances under test. The device is then placed over the medium in the dish. It is desirable to distribute substances so that those which, from experience, show the smallest inhibition areas are placed in the centre of the annular support. The medium is inoculated with the pathogenic germs in question in the usual manner; after incubation the effect of the different substances can be seen by the areas of inhibition observed. Full use is made of the surface of the medium in the Petri dish; the inhibited areas are circular and easily measured for evaluation.
