Abstract

A hub (1) keyed to shaft (2) is splined to sleeve (5) movable by a gear lever fork. Within the hub is a synchronising ring (8) with three tapering axial projections (12) engaging in hub recesses so the hub rotates the ring. Tension springs (19) correct the hub and ring so the ring does not engage a pinion (11) rotatable on the shaft. Movement of the hub towards the pinion causes the end faces (12a) of the projections to engage rings (13), containing spring loaded balls (15) locking the hub and sleeve, and push the ring (8) onto the pinion to brake or speed up the latter. Rotation of the ring w.r.t. the hub locks the ring onto the pinion and further sleeve movement causes the sleeve to engage teeth (22) on the pinion.
