Abstract

Styrene is produced by dehydrogenation of ethyl benzene in the presence of a catalyst comprising metal oxides deposited on an inert support as a layer 0.01-2 mm. thick. The catalyst has improved selectivity. Support are pref. fritted ceramic substances such as silicates of Ca, Al and Mg, a spinel, oxides of Al or Mg, graphite, silicon carbide, quartz or zirconium, and have an internal surface area 2 m.2/g., pref. 1, and esp. 0.1 m.2/g. The catalyst pref. comprises oxides of Fe, K and Cr, and is deposited onto the support from aqs. suspension or paste as a layer pref. 0.2-1 mm. thick.
