Abstract

Adhesive tapes carrying a layer of non-tacky hot melt adhesive material (I) covered with a layer of pressure-sensitive or contact adhesive (II), where (I) and (II) are incompatible at ambient temp. but sufficiently compatible when heated for (I) to diffuse through (II) to form a permanent bond to a secondary surface initially fastened by contact with (II), as in the Parent Patent, uses the double adhesive system for items or applications other than the described tapes. Material (I) is redefined as any adhesive which develops and fixes its adhesive character as a result of a heating cycle, rather than being restricted to materials suitable for hot melt coating processes. (II) may comprise or be covered with a layer of self adhesive material. Pref. are adhesive tapes where (I) is a copolymer of ethylene-vinyl acetate and polystyrene and (II) is natural rubber compounded with a tackifier; and where (I) is polystyrene and (II) is a styrene butadiene copolymer and tackifier. Esp. for adhesive tapes wound in reels with an intervening layer of a parting film. Tapes with contact adhesive on both faces and supported by a PET or PVC film or a paper made of saturated fibres bound by a butadiene-acrylonitrile compsn. For transfer tape bounds between two surfaces to be joined face to face with a strip of adhesive tape between the faces. Tapes or joints may be initially or temporarily established by the pressure sensitive or self adhesive surface coating and then developed into a more durable bond by heat treatment, e.g. ironing on.
