Abstract

The piston contains >=1 groove for housing a piston-ring and the novelty is that the piston is made in two parts each part contg one complete side of a groove, at least one side of the groove is coated with a wear-resistant material and the two parts are then joined to formt he piston. The piston may contain a grooves and be assembled from (n + 1) parts. Several configurations are possibly w.r.t. the joint-line between the two parts, which may be joined mechanically or by welding, and the wear-resistant coating is pref. applied by spraying or electroplating. The top part of the piston can be made of material with higher heat-resistance than the other parts. The grooves are very easy to coat whereas this operation is very difficult when the piston is made in one piece.
