Abstract

The sensors provide signals whose voltage are proportional to the on-route speed (V) of the ship, the apparent speed (W) of the wind and the apparent direction (A) of the wind. The instrument can also give the true direction (a + b) of the wind with respect to the route of the ship. The instrument has two assemblies, each of which has a sinusoidal potentiometer (3) and a linear potentiometer (4), and each of which has a voltage comparator (5) which can drive a motor (6) coupled to the potentiometers (3, 4). The two assemblies cooperate so that one sinusoidal potentiometer delivers a voltage proportional to the boat speed and to the cosine of the angle between the true wind direction and the boat direction.
