Abstract

The device, on the end of a tube (2) extending down the well, has a cylindrical casing (4) with a closed base (8) a set of side entry holes (4a) immediately below the connection (23) with the tube, and a piston (10). The piston is held down against the force of the spring (20) by magnets (18) and a further magnet (19) which is adjacent a disc (16) which retains the spring, and which is carried at the end of a spindle (11), extending downwards from the piston head. The piston is released by the force of a rush of gas through the ports, resulting in a venturi effect, so that the sloping face of the piston head is forced against the sloping face of a seating (14) inside the connection with the tube.
