Abstract

The mechanism for tightening railway sleeper bolts utilizes a hinging parallelogram (4, 5, 6) to position the spanner (7) co-axially on the bolt, thus eliminating spanner to bolt eccentricities inherent in current single hinging arm mechanisms. The parallelogram has two opposed vertical members (4, 6) respectively fixed to the chassis and carrying the spanner. The vehicle chassis (1) is U-shaped in plan with a rail guided wheel (2) on each leg. The fixed vertical parallelogram member (4) rotates about a vertical shaft (3) so that it may be swung either side of the rail and precompressed springs (8) between parallelogram and chassis maintain equilibrium. The block (6) carries a motor and gear unit for the spanner.
