Abstract

The concave spherical surface is provided with a series of ridges (38), e.g. having a sawtooth cross-section, the depth of the ridges (38) depending on the wavelength of the light being used. The spacing between the successive ridges (38) varies according to position in a direction perpendicular to the ridges in accordance with a specified equation. Each ridge (38) is mechanically traced on the surface along an elliptical curve, the spacing between two adjacent ridges (38) remaining constant throughout their length. Pref. the spherical surface has a glass or ceramic substrate (36) carrying a metal layer (34) in which the ridges (38) are formed.
