Abstract

Haemorrhage in the oesphagus due to the effect of rising juices on varicosity which is present is prevented by an oesophageal clip which is inserted into the bottom of the oesphagus from below by means of a clop application fitted with a teflon (RTM) cap which is subsequently removed, the applicator being operated by the thumb of the surgeon to carry out invagination of the oesophagus wall and to leave the clip in place. The clip has two annular rings which are forced apart and between which the invagination threat is held. The two rings clamp the wall of the oesophagus and the clip will be eliminated by natural means when the tissue dies. The clip and carrier are pref. in stainless steel nylon, teflon or plastics material.
