Abstract

The feature of this type of sealing ring design that applies mainly to servo-pistons used in automatic transmissions of motor vehicles is, that contrary to the usual practice where the sealing rings fit into pre-machined grooves, the sealing ring in this case are restrained axially by a small shoulder on the one side and a small collar or band on the other side which are designed to prevent axial movement of the ring. The piston can be pre-loaded by a compression spring in the normal rest position, so that the sealing ring is pre-loaded hydraulically prior to the movement of the piston taking place. Advantages claimed for this type of sealing ring fitting are low cost and ease of manufacture.
